Z okazji przypadającej w 2016 roku 20. rocznicy wydania debiutanckiego albumu The Third Eye Foundation "Semtex" z 1996 roku, jednego z najbardziej wpływowych albumów drum and bassowych tamtych czasów, warto ponownie przyjrzeć się karierze Matta Elliotta, jego kompozytora. Elliott nie miał nawet skończonych 16 lat, gdy postanowił przerwać studia i poświęcić się swojej pasji muzycznej. Dostał pracę w słynneego sklepu muzycznego Revolver Records w Bristolu (opisanej w książce Richarda Kinga "Original Rockers" z 2015 r., która wyjaśnia, w jaki sposób sklep ten wpłynął na rozpowszechnienie się muzyki indie, a zwłaszcza trip hopu) i zaczął DJ-ować w bristolskich klubach, choć nie był wystarczająco dorosły, by móc tam legalnie występować.

W 1993 roku zaczął występować jako The Third Eye, pojawił się na albumach Movietone i Flying Saucer Attack, a także założył własny zespół Linda's Strange Vacation z Kate Wright i Rachel Brook; użył też nazwy zespołu dla swojej mikro wytwórni, w której wydał pierwsze utwory The Third Eye Foundation. W 1995 roku Elliott był jednym z nielicznych artystów zaangażowanych w nagranie płyty hołdu dla słynnego amerykańskiego duetu krautrockowego Silver Apples, Electronics Evocations. Następnie został zaproszony, by wystąpić przed nimi na ich reunion tourze po Stanach Zjednoczonych.

W wieku 20 lat Elliott był już zaangażowany w niemal każdą dziedzinę przemysłu muzycznego. Ale jego historia dopiero się zaczynała. W 1996 roku wydał swój pierwszy album jako The Third Eye Foundation "Semtex", we własnej wytwórni, przy wsparciu Domino (początek ich wieloletniej współpracy). Nagrany w squacie, który Elliott dzielił z Mattem Jonesem z Crescent, na czterośladowym rejestratorze pożyczonym od Dave'a Pearce'a z Flying Saucer Attack i zmiksowany na słuchawkach z nadmierną głośnością (co spowodowało trwałą utratę słuchu przy około 3 kHz), "Semtex" jest brutalny i bezkompromisowy. Zawierający mieszankę hałaśliwych, połamanych riffów gitar i rozgorączkowanych automatów perkusyjnych, z wokalem Debbie Parsons pojawiającej się w niektórych utworach, jest antytezą elektronicznej muzyki klubowej. Swoim stylem wpisał się w dyskografię Elliotta, w której stałymi tematami są niepokoje społeczne, samotność, polityczny zamęt, gniew i antyestablishmentowe nastroje. Ta limitowana reedycja z okazji 20-lecia ukazania się albumu, zawiera osiem wcześniej niepublikowanych utworów, w większości nagranych na kasetach w latach 1991-1997 i zremasterowanych przez Andersa Petersona. Ten poszerzony dokument jest świadectwem konsekwentnego i nigdy nie poddającego się nastawienia The Third Eye Foundation. Odtwarzajcie bardzo głośno (pamiętając o ryzyku, że skończycie kompletnie zdruzgotani muzyką o tak rzadkim zasięgu i skali).
